U.S.S.V. HARVEY MILK

Mission Statement

Project Valor Sailing is a Provincetown-based nonprofit dedicated to honoring and supporting United States veterans, disabled individuals, and active-duty personnel through therapeutic sailing and maritime education.

Operating the restored Dutch-built Lemsteraak vessel VALOR, the organization provides free sailing experiences, fosters lifelong connections, and offers hands-on instruction in the arts and sciences of seamanship. The mission is rooted in dignity, inclusion, and service — transforming a historic vessel into a floating academy and ambassadorial flagship that sails in tribute to all who serve.

Core Values

  • Honor and remembrance of military service
  • Healing through adventure and connection
  • Education in maritime arts and sciences
  • Community engagement and inclusivity

Historical Timeline

1979

The vessel VALOR is originally built in the Netherlands as Antje, a Dutch Lemsteraak.

2021

Commodore Adam R. Howard discovers the vessel via fellow Navy veteran Tony Dziadul. Inspired by its history and lines, Howard initiates its acquisition.

2022

Project Valor Sailing takes possession of the vessel and begins a year-long restoration in Virginia, investing over $100,000 in upgrades and disabled accessibility.

2023

The vessel is relocated to Provincetown, MA, and begins the final restorations for the centerpiece of Project Valor Sailing’s therapeutic and educational mission.

2024–2025

Sailing program expand to include veterans, disabled individuals, first responders, and community organizations. The boat will also be made available for film shoots and private events to support sustainability.

Summer 2026

The vessel will be formally commissioned as the U.S.S.V. Harvey Milk, the nation’s only LGBTQ+ ambassadorial flagship, during a gala celebration in Provincetown featuring a military flyover, dignitary remarks, and public visitation.
